A good movie: Downfall
I saw an awesome movie last night - Der Untergang (english title: Downfall; it is in German with subtitles). It is taken from the memoirs of Traudl Junge, the girl who was hired to be Hitler's secretary in 1942 and was with him up through his suicide in the bunker in Berlin. It would be interesting to read the book she wrote, upon which the movie was based. But the movie was quite gripping, and has a lot to say about war, the effect that Hitler had upon the German people, and how they reacted to his suicide (although there isn't as much after his suicide, as that is pretty much the emotional climax of the movie; everything else is pretty much an afterword.) Especially sad was the depiction of Joseph Goebbels and his wife killing their 6 children, then themselves. However, at the end, we are given footage of the real Junge talking of the Holocaust. How she had once said of how she was so young, she couldn't do anything, it wasn't her responsibility, she was so young. But she realized a few years ago that people her age had been killed for standing up in dissent to what was going on, and she realized that claiming youth or ignorance to her surroundings was no longer a sufficient excuse, when so many of her peers were indeed willing to sacrifice themselves. One little statement, less than 5 minutes worth of film. But, having lived for a while in Germany (a number of years ago), I know how significant this is, and from a person who saw so much. Wow. I have to give respect to this person. I could write more about this, but I shall have to be content with the given advice: find this movie, find a way to watch it. 2006-07-28 05:01:18 GMT
